In 2008 my late Brother Bill Cole challenged me to enter the cooking competition at the Madison Courier Backyard BBQ contest. I accepted the challenge and the "World Famous Butt Brothers" were born. The original team consisted of Chris Casey, Jared Baier, Wes Bryant, Jonathon Cole and John Cole. Bill Cole and Dan Cole were going to help as well. Bill showed up to help eat the food and Dan of course in usual Dan fashion no showed for any of it.
The first year was very interesting to say the least the night before the competition with the trailer loaded, (5) hotel rooms booked, a couple of thousand dollars invested we were informed we could not use electricity. Our smoker was a Traeger pellet grill which requires electricity. Even though the rules didn’t state this, one the world’s most intelligent, intellectual, business men with the personality of a pig’s ass Steve Thomas of the Thomas Family Winery decided we couldn’t compete. Why would Mr. Thomas want to support a business man who was trying to promote Madison’s tourism industry and spending thousands to do so?
What Mr. Steve didn’t understand is that the Cole family has a long family history in Madison all the way back before the Civil War. Great, Great Grandfather Luther Martin actually saved Madison from being burned the ground by General John Morgan during the Civil War. So Mr. Steve learned a valuable lesson that day.

You do not to cross the Cole boys in their own home town. After phone calls to the Mayor Tim Armstrong (He supplied us power.) and Jane Wallis Jacobs owner of the Madison Courier (The Back Yard BBQ Sponsor) and one member of the Lytle family (Madison Chamber of Commerce) we were suddenly allowed to compete. There is no way we would win anything because Mr. Thomas controlled the score cards but it was about having fun, not the winning.
In 2009, 2010, we actually placed 1st or 3rd in each category Beef, Ribs, Pork according to the judges published scores but of course Mr. Thomas would not allow us to win anything. Because he controlled the score cards, no one knew what the final scores were until 2012 when somebody insisted that the past results be published. It is amazing that this idiot has this much control over this event. (He is on the committee and profits from the Alchol Sales." A little conflict of interest.)
During these events the World Famous Butt Brothers invite almost anyone into their tent to enjoy the BBQ, corn, beans, slaw and a beverage on us, we have fed a few hundred in Madison. We get so many compliments on our food and how it is the best tasting in the competition so if the people love it, it makes it all worth while.
My brother Bill loved my Brisket and raved about it and he kept me excited about cooking it. In July 2012 my brother passed away from Pulmonary Fibrosis a crippling and fatal lung disease. Because Bill made this event special for me I have not been in the right frame of mind to compete. But now it is time to move on and start again. Everything we cook, every person we feed and if we win an award it is all done in the memory of the best brother a man could ask for William Keith Cole August 3, 1959 to July 16, 2012 RIP Brother the lord took you from us way to soon.
